The First Adventure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">When I first started thinking about getting a dog, I knew that I wanted a companion who could come along with me on hikes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I thought a lot about the physical characteristics I\u2019d want &#8211; and kinda overlooked the mental elements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Most healthy dogs will take a long walk with you. Not every dog is cut out to be a camping buddy, with its discomforts, intrusions by other people &#8211; and wildlife &#8211; and often unpredictable weather.I knew Max had the legs and stamina to keep up with me on a camping trip.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But would she <i>enjoy<\/i> it?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">(Mei-Chan, my parents\u2019 shih-tzu, nearly had a heart attack the first time she visited the suburbs, and discovered that the night got very dark outside the city).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Maxx\u2019s first encounter with a tent had been under semi-controlled circumstances: a single night at a friend\u2019s farm, where I was able to pitch the tent and entice Max to sleep in it without having to worry about the distractions of a populated campsite.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Other than nearly taking the tent down several times, as she tested this strange new \u201csoft house\u201d idea,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Max did about as well as could be expected.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Even when the heavens opened up at 3a.m. and made us relocate to the guest house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But last weekend was the real test.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Four days, living semi-rough in a tent, with only a pillow-pad between us and the ground, and all the distracting sounds, sights, and smells a dog could hope for.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And Other People!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Would she be frightened and overwhelmed by everything?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Would she lay down by the car and refuse to move?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or would she have fun?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I probably shouldn\u2019t have worried.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Max remembered the tent, and hopped in\u00a0and out like she\u2019d been doing it her entire life, unworried by the soft walls and zippered door.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And while she still occasionally barked at people passing our campsite<span style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\">, she was calmer than I&#8217;d even hoped for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1251 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/tent-dog-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"135\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/tent-dog-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/tent-dog-300x300.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 135px) 100vw, 135px\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\">Although she declined to use the dog bed I\u2019d brought for her, instead insisting on sharing my sleeping bag.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\">Thanks, Max.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Still: test one, passed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Not perfectly, however.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If she didn\u2019t like the way someone looked (smelled) or moved, a quiet rumbling growl would start deep in her throat, fading away to grumbling when told, \u201cstop it.\u2019 <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We did a lot of \u201dstop it\u201d that first night.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And she <span style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\">insisted on getting out of the tent twice, to sniff around and reassure herself. Tents are <\/span><i style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\">unnerving<\/i><span style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\">, if you\u2019re a dog.<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\">But she trusted me, and so, eventually, trusted the tent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And when we had a nighttime visitor come sniffing around the tent in the small hours, rather than getting upset or stressed, Max simply got up from her position at my feet and lay down between me and the sniffed-at tent wall, and went back to sleep.\u00a0 That was unexpected, and oddly heart-warming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But the real test came on Saturday, when we set out for our full day hike.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I strapped her backpack on, just as we\u2019d done a handful of times in the apartment and then on shorter walks, but for the first time loaded the pockets with her gear (treats, poo baggies,) and mine (keys), and a water bottle. Would she balk?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At first, yes. But once we\u2019d gotten the two side backs weight-balanced, she seemed to realize that everyone was carrying a pack, and she was being included, and I swear to god you could see her attitude change, just like that.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Dogs like having jobs, and responsibilities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Max decided that carrying things was hers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Test two, passed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I wasn\u2019t going to have to pack up and take her home.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Whew.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But the real test was about to start.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Max likes to say hi to other dogs, and play with the whenever possible.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Would she be willing to ignore the other dogs we saw on the trail, and stick to the path?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">To my great relief, yes.
