Actually, replacing a rotted-out wooden deck beside the swimming pool at Casarboles, my wife\u2019s family\u2019s place in Ponce, Puerto Rico. I\u2019m in a race against the clock (we leave for home in two days, having already extended our stay by two weeks), and it\u2019s been a bear. In the middle of it all, I developed an ear infection, probably from protecting my ears with noise-canceling earbuds, complete with ground-in dirt. Did I let that slow me down? I did not! (Well, maybe a little.)<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a sort of stop-motion record of what I\u2019ve been doing:<\/p>\n<p>Grinding and painting the steel supports&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17246\" src=\"https:\/\/www.starrigger.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Deck-grinding-and-painting_sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Last floor plank laid, yours truly ready to keel over&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17245\" src=\"https:\/\/www.starrigger.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Deck-floor-done-triumphant-and-exhausted_sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The new floor, shown to the audience in daylight by a far more attractive model; old, rickety railing system still in place&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17248\" src=\"https:\/\/www.starrigger.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Deck-floor-done-rickety-railing-still-up-modeled-by-Allysen1_sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Old railing gone, new railing begun&#8230; two days to finish&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17247\" src=\"https:\/\/www.starrigger.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Deck-floor-done-new-railing-begun_sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Okay, back to work!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you haven\u2019t been following, I\u2019ve been building a deck.
