{"id":1915,"date":"2022-03-25T05:03:40","date_gmt":"2022-03-25T13:03:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/?p=1915"},"modified":"2022-03-23T20:26:57","modified_gmt":"2022-03-24T04:26:57","slug":"1915","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/2022\/03\/25\/1915\/","title":{"rendered":"Train the Dog, but Also Train the Owner&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/2022\/02\/25\/separation-anxiety-human-not-dogs\/\">I discussed my mixed feelings about sending Max off to Puppy Boot Camp<\/a>, also known as \u201cboard and train.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When the day came, I packed her into the car and drive about half an hour north, to S., the trainer\u2019s home. S. met us outside, and we talked for a bit &#8211; and I admitted that I was about 3 seconds away from grabbing my dog and going home.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Apparently this is entirely normal drop-off emotion?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Parents of kindergartners may relate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Eventually, when I couldn\u2019t stall any longer,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I handed Max\u2019s leash over to S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Max wanted <i>nothing<\/i> to do with that, going flat on the ground like a toddler about to have a tantrum.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And I had to take a step back and let someone else &#8211; a relative stranger I\u2019d only met once before &#8211;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>handle it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">S. was calm but firm, and eventually Max went into the house with them, and I got back in the car and went home, thinking, \u201cwhat the fuck have I just done?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/patreon.com\/LAGilman\">written a very large check, is what I\u2019d done<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The first week, I was at Rainforest Writers\u2019 Retreat, and Max would have been in boarding anyway, so it wasn\u2019t too hard.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Max was decompressing, so not much happened those first few days for her, either.<\/p>\n<p>The second week, it was&#8230;kinda nice?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I missed her, but I was also remembering how much time and energy she was eating.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I was getting regular updates, meanwhile &#8211; photos of her looking energetic and pleased, and video of her working on her skills, focused and happy. So\u2026 it was okay. We were all doing okay.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The cat, in fact, was doing GREAT.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He started sleeping on my pillow again, now that he didn\u2019t have to worry about Max trying to stick her nose in his bidness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Oh no.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is bad.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Am I a bad person for enjoying my dog-free life?<\/p>\n<p>(Parents of summer camp-age children are laughing sympathetically right now, possibly)<\/p>\n<p>The third week\u2026 was hard.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Even the cat started to look around like, \u201chey, wait, isn\u2019t someone else supposed to be coming back already?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>S. and I had a Zoom meeting to go over the progress Max had made, and\u2026 Max was in the background, resting on her cot, not even lifting an ear when she heard my voice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Shit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My girl had transferred her loyalties.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>She<\/i> didn\u2019t miss <i>me<\/i>!<\/p>\n<p>Then S. pointed out that every time I spoke, Max\u2019s tail thumped. She totally knew it was me, she was excited to hear me &#8211; but she had been told to \u201cplace\u201d on her cot, and that\u2019s what she was doing.<\/p>\n<p>Oh.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Okay.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I guess?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But then I got handed my own homework: to think about the past two weeks, and what I\u2019d want to do differently when Max came back, if there would be a change in the House Rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The main change I decided to make was that Max would sleep in her kennel all the time, not the bed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I know a lot of people are okay with sharing bed space, but Max is ~45 pounds of long, lean canine, and also, she kicks. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Other than that\u2026 it was going to be a lot of wait-and-see.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Her behavior was hopefully going to be different, so I\u2019d work off that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And then the day came\u2026 S. brought Max home.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And\u2026 she didn\u2019t seem glad to see me?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But the thing was, I\u2019d been used to judging her happiness by her jumping up to greet me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She\u2019s been told not to do that.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So I had to look closer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She went straight to her new cot when told to, and settled down\u2026 but she was <i>wiggling.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>And <i>whining<\/i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She wanted <b>so badly<\/b> to get up and greet me with wild abandon, but she was being a Good Girl and staying put.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Even when the cat came in the room.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Max perked up and watched the cat intently, but when reminded, she sank back down on her cot and did not do her usual up-in-the-cat\u2019s-bidness greeting.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Holy shit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My Slightly Wild Child had embraced discipline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And then I was introduced to the discipline <i>I\u2019d<\/i> have to embrace, for the next few weeks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Max did her part.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And it\u2019s a lot.
