{"id":2432,"date":"2022-12-01T06:00:30","date_gmt":"2022-12-01T14:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/?p=2432"},"modified":"2022-11-30T11:52:01","modified_gmt":"2022-11-30T19:52:01","slug":"walking-among-the-jacarandas-with-john-fowles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/2022\/12\/01\/walking-among-the-jacarandas-with-john-fowles\/","title":{"rendered":"Walking Among the Jacarandas With John Fowles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"3245\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">For the privilege of sharing a common favorite book and an interest in natural history with the noted British author John Fowles, I earned a book hurled at my head.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1f5c\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Not by Fowles!<\/p>\n<p id=\"93f5\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">It began with\u00a0Wiwaxia\u00a0and ended with the jacarandas and a cup of tea.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d340\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">My aunt, I told Fowles as we walked among the beautiful jacarandas in bloom on the Chapman University campus, always had loved these trees. They\u2019re strong and durable.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3a0a\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Fowles\u2019 voice was soft and he spoke carefully, with a bit of sibilant whistle with some of his \u201cesses.\u201d I\u2019m sure this is a British mark of something \u2026 but he wasn\u2019t the least bit \u201ccrusty\u201d (as in upper-crust). He was down-to-earth and courteous.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5481\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">He was curious, almost relentlessly so.<\/p>\n<p id=\"58e8\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">He asked about\u00a0the many rabbits on campus \u2014 escaped from labs ages before.<\/p>\n<p id=\"58c5\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">He asked about\u00a0the large flock of green parrots \u2014 escaped pets, now breeding in large numbers (as did the rabbits).<\/p>\n<p id=\"9050\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">He asked about the jacarandas.\u00a0I had always thought this tree was from Australia, as were the many varieties of gum and eucalyptus we see everywhere around Southern California.\u00a0But it turns out that\u00a0jacarandas are from Argentina and in the wild, they are regarded as a threatened species.<\/p>\n<p id=\"056c\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But they are planted as landscape trees around the world and their purple flowers rival cherry blossoms for beauty.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8956\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I\u2019ve been going over my work today and thinking, \u201cFowles treated me as an equal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"5dea\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Because he was egalitarian? Perhaps. Fowles is the author of one of the least-objectionable of the \u201cman kidnaps, rapes, and tortures young woman\u201d books, his first bestseller,\u00a0The Collector.\u00a0At the time I was walking with this man on the Chapman University campus, it hadn\u2019t yet dawned on me that this type of literary subject might represent an extreme form of toxic patriarchy and that sane people might not regard such a tale as a subject for light reading prior to bedtime.<\/p>\n<p id=\"673a\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph ack acl abg bv b acm acn wj aco acp acq wm acr acs act acu acv acw acx acy acz aea aeb aec aed aee pr by\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">That issue was never raised at the time, not in any seminar where I was present, and not between Fowles and me.<\/p>\n<p>We talked about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wonderful-Life-Burgess-Nature-History\/dp\/039330700X\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Wonderful Life<\/a>, a mutual book favorite of ours, written by the late (both men dead, now) Stephen Jay Gould.\u00a0This book tells the story of the discovery and interpretation of the Burgess Shale animals, and Fowles had just returned from a trip to Canada to see the Burgess Shale with his own eyes. Never do what others want or demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"f83a\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">He signed one of several of his first editions, and a few not-first, to me. I took those with me in my single box of books when we moved to Florida.<\/p>\n<p id=\"af4e\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I\u2019m reading something of mine today, preparing it for publication.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0956\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In book form.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0e1e\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And I saw something else, as well.<\/p>\n<p id=\"eac3\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Via social media, a young woman asked, \u201cAre you proud of your skin color?\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"a255\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I understand the reason why the question was asked, and though my answer to that question is \u201cNo,\u201d I ask myself the question, \u201cAre you proud of your work?\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"8e48\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The work I\u2019ve done for a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c6e4\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And to this, my answer, is \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"c46e\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And I think, now that I am ten years younger than the 70-year-old Fowles was when he walked with me on that long-ago day on that far-away campus,<\/p>\n<p id=\"0eee\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">He was right.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c327\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I\u2019ll never know why Fowles wrote\u00a0The Collector. I see some material online that says he wrote it to \u201cFulfill a boyish fantasy of imprisoning a woman.\u201d\u00a0I hope that\u2019s not really the case; certainly there was little to nothing of this left in the kind, thoughtful, gentle older man I walked and talked with.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2277\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">He seemed to me to have been a man who had grown tremendously throughout his life. A thoughtful man, interested in the world around him and all of its creatures. All of life.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"ecaa\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cYou must always do what you do for yourself first and only.
