A weekend to celebrate (good planning, 2022!), and Monday rolls around in a new year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">[disclaimer; the rest of this post will be taking a Northern Hemisphere view of the season.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Apologies to friends in the Southern hemisphere]<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For me, the \u201cnew year\u201d always feels like it starts in September.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Part of that may be because I\u2019m Jewish, and our lunar new year comes around then, but I think it\u2019s more about school starting again.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>New clothes, new schedules, new notebooks and pens\u2026 all that amazing, long-stretching <i>possible.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">By the time December comes around, though, the routines have become, well routine. The notebooks are scrawled in, the pens lost or dried up, the possible likewise drying into the <i>actual<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Maybe that\u2019s why New Year\u2019s Day is my favorite holiday, because you\u2019re stuck, you\u2019re tired, you\u2019re a little worn out, and then New Year\u2019s Eve comes around, and people start talking about fresh starts, about making resolutions to do it better this time.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s a second chance pretending to be a new start. It\u2019s addictive.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And resolving to do something is easy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThis year I\u2019m gonna\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So many things we\u2019re gonna.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Over a decade ago, I<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>resolved to make no more resolutions, and that\u2019s one I\u2019ve managed to keep.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Mostly.\u00a0 But I\u2019m no more immune to the lure of a fresh start than I am to the lure of a fresh, new notebook, never mind that I already have more notebooks, half-filled, than even a writer could ever need.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s aspirational, I\u2019m gonna DO IT this time.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m going to take control of my own story, and rewrite it fresh, and <i>better.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Yep. This year I\u2019m going to stop worrying about Goodreads reviews.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m going to stop buying anything from Amazon. I\u2019m going to write every single day, and make every single internal deadline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">C\u2019mon.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No I\u2019m not. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That\u2019s not to say we can\u2019t change, of course we can. We do. In fact, it\u2019s harder NOT to change, than to change.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It takes serious effort to remain static in the face of life\u2019s constant friction. But personal, internal changes are most effective when done a piece at a time.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There is no deus ex machina to lift us overnight out of our funk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But if our lives are stories &#8211; and they are, a multitude of intermingling stories, crosshatching the globe &#8211;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>then January 1st doesn\u2019t start the revision of the last 365 days.
