{"id":378,"date":"2020-06-26T05:00:05","date_gmt":"2020-06-26T13:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/?p=378"},"modified":"2020-06-25T22:25:14","modified_gmt":"2020-06-26T06:25:14","slug":"love-anger-and-a-skinned-elbow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/2020\/06\/26\/love-anger-and-a-skinned-elbow\/","title":{"rendered":"Love, Anger, And A Skinned Elbow."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Anyone who has followed my social media for more than a few weeks know that I don\u2019t shy away from having an opinion, nor do I shirk from standing up and making some noise in support of what I think is right.\u00a0 <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>So when the BLM\/anti-police brutality protests started in Seattle, I laced up my boots, wrote the number of my bail contact on my arm, and went down to Capital Hill.<\/p>\n<p>That night\u00a0was not the first time I\u2019d seen the police attack unarmed protesters.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was, however, the first time I\u2019d ever been tear-gassed or shot at.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And I discovered &#8211; much to my own dismay &#8211; that my first instinct is not to run from danger, but to run <i>into<\/i> it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">(short story shorter: I got my companions out of danger, then went back in, because the cops were using flashbangs as well as tear gas, people needed ear protection, I had a 50-set pack of earplugs, and\u2026 <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Somewhere, my mother is sighing, but also, I think, a little proud.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">ANYway.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A little while after that, my boss mentioned that she was attending a training session for basic techniques in militant nonviolent civil protest, sponsored by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/valleyandmountainorg\/?eid=ARAfyhcaeihJ7-bxzM-z5NH70BriJp2-xa8rUVk1p1ejTyMl5h6uJ2JAeupytmjXOe009YhGO3mKzj7-\"><span class=\"s1\">Valley &amp; Mountain<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WashingtonPPC\/?eid=ARDuhJ0fzyHml6hzA4Me7q1By-o-1UqOIVYXePVFOFaKwa7vmapBRNE9opwKQ7lD1BuKyP6JjU-9AZWl\">Washington Poor People&#8217;s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival<\/a><\/span>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And I thought, \u201cif you\u2019re going to continue to be a chaotic good paladin idiot, you probably need that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><!--more--><br \/>\nI went to the Monday session, which was interrupted by an actual shooter drill (a man came into CHOP, armed, and started raising a fuss), and then again on Thursday night, when it was relocated to Jimi Hendrix Park.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Each session was a little different, and I was glad I went to both.<\/p>\n<p>Our instructor was Reverend Sekou, a Pentecostal preacher who was at<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Ferguson and Charlottesville, and I\u2019m going to say flat out that a) he was an excellent teacher and b) he swears like\u2026 well, like I do.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He\u2019s also funny AF, while never undercutting the seriousness and importance of what he was training us to do.<\/p>\n<p>(at one point, while having us repeatedly call back key phrases, he stopped and said \u201cthis is how cults start, this is absolutely how cults start.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">To start, they had us ground ourselves, to listen to our bodies and focus on what we were feeling and thinking.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 I<\/span>t sounds New Age hokey, but when you\u2019re in the middle of a protest, you\u2019ve got a lot of adrenaline running, so it was a good reminder to center and ground, as my own Wren Valere would say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Then there was discussion of what militant non-violent protest <i>means<\/i>, and what our role is in the larger scheme, and <i>why<\/i> we do it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cA deep, abiding love\u201d was one of the phrases we repeated back to the Reverend &#8211; we act not from hate or anger, but love, and hope that our actions can bring a better world into being.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He used Christian theology, but it was <i>olam chesed yibaneh<\/i> in different clothing: we will build this world with love.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Militant nonviolent protest does not to attack, does not cause harm, but refuses to give way.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If they tell us to go, we stay.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If they try to push us, we sit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If they try to carry us off, we make them do all the work. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our job is, as the Reverend put it, to make \u201cmoral drama.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>To refuse to make it easy on the cops, and, if possible, get more eyes on the issue. To make folk at home aware of what is being fought for.<\/p>\n<p>The first rule is the preservation of life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The second rule is, live to fight another day. We&#8217;re not there to be martyrs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">We also heard from protest medics (heroes, every damn one of then), and from the national lawyers guild, who drilled us on how to interact with cops (short version: don\u2019t.).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m pretty sure I wasn\u2019t the only one, when they had us repeating the four phrases (<i>\u201cam I free to go?\u201d \u201cI invoke the right to remain silent,\u201d \u201cI want to call my lawyer now,\u201d and \u201cI do not consent to a search\u201d<\/i>) to hear in my head, \u201cI had the right to remain silent, but I lacked the <i>ability.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>Thanks, Tater Salad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It wasn\u2019t all discussion, though &#8211; far from it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There were also repeated drills on how to do \u201cnon-confrontational noncompliance,\u201d what to do if the cops start swinging, what to do if there\u2019s shooting (which cost me a skinned elbow and a torn pair of jeans), and what to do if you\u2019re hit with tear gas, all in the hopes that muscle memory would take over when needed, rather than (utterly natural and normal) panic.<\/p>\n<p>And if anyone doubted that any of this might be necessary, the sight of the bicycle brigade ringing us in protection was a sober reminder that yes, there are people who want to see us fail, and are comfortable using violence to ensure it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We were training in non-violent actions, but just as there are medics and lawyers and livestreamers, there also needs to be people who are willing to defend.
