The book was published by <a href=\"https:\/\/ifwgaustralia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IFWG Publishing<\/a> in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Since Gillian was unable to attend the awards, Yaritji Green and Gerry Huntman accepted on her behalf. The Ditmar Award has been given at Australia&#8217;s national science fiction convention since 1969.<\/p>\n<p>Gillian said on Facebook, &#8220;<span class=\"d2edcug0 hpfvmrgz qv66sw1b c1et5uql oi732d6d ik7dh3pa fgxwclzu a8c37x1j keod5gw0 nxhoafnm aigsh9s9 d3f4x2em fe6kdd0r mau55g9w c8b282yb iv3no6db jq4qci2q a3bd9o3v knj5qynh oo9gr5id hzawbc8m\" dir=\"auto\">I was so subversive in this novel that I still have trouble believing fans voted for it. This gives me a ridiculous amount of hope at a time when hope is not everyday.<\/span>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In <em>The Year of the Fruit Cake<\/em>, five women meet up by chance when they end up sharing a table in a caf\u00e9. They are all very different, and one of them \u2014 though we\u2019re not sure for a long time which one of them \u2014 is an alien from a culture of multiple genders in which the beings change genders several times over a lifetime.
