{"id":740,"date":"2020-10-30T05:00:50","date_gmt":"2020-10-30T13:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/?p=740"},"modified":"2020-10-29T19:12:16","modified_gmt":"2020-10-30T03:12:16","slug":"what-have-i-done-with-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/2020\/10\/30\/what-have-i-done-with-me\/","title":{"rendered":"Who Am I and What Have I Done with Me?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Close readers may have noted that I missed last month&#8217;s slot.\u00a0 Close readers may also remember that the month before that, I had just taken in a foster puppy.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, those two things are related.\u00a0 And I am here to tell you that writing a book, maintaining a Patreon, holding down a part-time office gig, dealing with a pandemic, fighting for democracy AND housebreaking a puppy is\u00a0<strong>exhausting.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But &#8211; as everyone expected &#8211; I foster-failed, and now the household of two has officially and legally become a household of three. The puppy is four months old and (mostly) housebroken, and Castiel the Cat has learned that if he hisses and swats at her nose, she will stop trying to Make Him Love Her.\u00a0 So all is well, and I can get back to writing and righting all the wrongs, right?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_741\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-741\" style=\"width: 152px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-741\" src=\"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/BOOP-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"152\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/BOOP-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/BOOP-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/BOOP-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/BOOP.jpeg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 152px) 100vw, 152px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>hey, whatcha doing?<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>*<em>insert hollow laughter here<\/em>*<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;ve noticed something interesting, as I go about my new, somewhat chaotic routine.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m an introvert. But\u00a0 now I am an introvert-with-dog, and nobody warned me how much that would change&#8230;.everything.\u00a0 I have to take the dog outside upwards of six times a day, making the short walk to the park next door, or around the block, or sometimes to the &#8220;puppy pen&#8221; at the nearby dog park.\u00a0 And Maxi is a friendly creature, who thinks everyone exists to a) play with or b) pet her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So now I am known by nearly everyone within a three block radius as &#8220;Maxi&#8217;s mom.&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0We have dog-friends we\u00a0<em>must\u00a0<\/em>say hello to, when we&#8217;re on the street at the same time.\u00a0 We have human-friends we exchange greetings with, all of whom need to remark on how much Maxi has grown (she&#8217;s gone from 8 pounds to 19 pounds, seemingly overnight and most of it leg).\u00a0 In the middle of a pandemic, I know more people to actually talk with than I ever met in two years living at my previous address.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">More, I belong to several Facebook groups for training and enrichment of said dog, plus the foster-and-volunteer group for the shelter I got her from.\u00a0 And I talk regularly with my dog-owning friends, like anyone suddenly handed a small new life and told good luck and godspeed, desperate for advice and reassurances that I&#8217;m not doing it wrong.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve become&#8230;social.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-742 alignleft\" style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\" src=\"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/cas-stare-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/cas-stare-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/cas-stare-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The cat is horrified.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in another personal departure,\u00a0 because the dog wakes up at 6 and requires walks and training and feeding and then another walk and then exercise, and some more training, my usual writing routine, which went from 6am to noon, is kaput.\u00a0 I can only sit down uninterrupted at the computer when she goes down for the night, somewhere around 7pm.\u00a0 Which means I&#8217;ve become a nighttime writer.\u00a0 Which means I&#8217;m getting less sleep, which means I&#8217;m still exhausted.\u00a0 And writing slower, which brings us back around to my opening apology.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The cat is actually okay with this change, as he keeps me company while she snores in her crate.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_743\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-743\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-743 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/funko-me-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/funko-me-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/funko-me-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/funko-me.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-743\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">and puppy makes three<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Close readers may have noted that I missed last month&#8217;s slot.\u00a0 Close readers may also remember that the month before that, I had just taken in a foster puppy.
