(Fortuitously, I replaced my ancient sewing machine a couple of months earlier.) Most of it has been masks. With <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/215625729540820\/permalink\/249275499509176\/\" target=\"_blank\">MaskUpNM<\/a>, a volunteer group, I&#8217;ve been making masks for health care workers, women&#8217;s shelters, the Navajo Nation and other New Mexico tribes, impoverished school children, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/masks-05-13.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-955\" srcset=\"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/masks-05-13.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/masks-05-13-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/masks-05-13-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In December, the group started making scrub caps for ICU nurses at local hospitals, who have been exhausted and overwhelmed taking care of Covid patients. Many of them don&#8217;t get issued scrub caps by their employers, or only get disposable ones that are uncomfortable and wasteful of resources. After replacing my ancient serger, which seized up halfway through this project, I just finished the second round of scrub caps for this effort &#8211; 48 caps.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"812\" src=\"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/scrub-caps-2021-01-18.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-954\" srcset=\"https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/scrub-caps-2021-01-18.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/scrub-caps-2021-01-18-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/treehousewriters.com\/wp53\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/scrub-caps-2021-01-18-768x624.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since I&#8217;m blessed with stable finances, I have been purchasing my own fabric rather than using fabric donated to MaskUpNM (they can always use more). This allows me to choose designs I enjoy working with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Handling these beautiful, colorful fabrics is highly therapeutic for me, which is one of the reasons I keep doing this.
